Small Boxes

Containers are everywhere around humans. They get decorated in all sorts of ways so that they may be distinguished one from another. These boxes are intended for practical, utilitarian purposes but not just for that purpose. These boxes are made to be shown, to be a part of the decorations of a life.

What these photos display are the unique characteristics grains and colors of different species of wood. No dyes, stains, or paints were used in the finishing of these pieces. These finished boxes display the work of life in the form of different trees. Some species are considered exotic because their wood is from other continents. Some are relatively common trees in North America but not commonly seen as lumber.

Using something substantial, real, unique and permanent for an ordinary job makes a statement about someone. A plastic container might be less expensive than using a handmade, wooden box to store pencils on your desk but it cheapens everything associated with the usage.
